Servants of Allah, part of believing in the Last Day—after the signs of the Hour—is to believe in resurrection and what happens on the Day of Judgment, until the people of Paradise enter Paradise—may Allah make us among them—and the people of Hell enter Hell—may Allah protect us from it.
Know, O servants of Allah, that the resurrection from the graves is confirmed by the Qur’an, the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ, sound reasoning, and human nature. Allah has refuted those who deny it, and all prophets informed their nations about it. Allah says:
“And the Trumpet will be blown, and all who are in the heavens and the earth will fall unconscious, except whom Allah wills. Then it will be blown again, and they will rise up looking on.” [Az-Zumar 39:68]
Allah will gather all people—those from the beginning and the end—for a known Day. They will be brought to the land of gathering for judgment. So fear your Lord, and know that He did not create you without purpose, nor will He leave you without responsibility. He created you to worship Him alone.
Allah says:
“O mankind! Fear your Lord! Indeed, the earthquake of the Hour is a terrible thing. On that Day, every nursing mother will forget her child, every pregnant woman will miscarry, and people will appear drunk, though they are not drunk—but the punishment of Allah is severe.” [Al-Hajj 22:1-2]
On that Day, the earth will be shaken, mountains will move, stars will fall, seas will burst, and the sky will split apart. It will be a day of great hardship and terror. Allah, the Just Judge, will come to judge His servants.
People will be gathered barefoot, naked, and uncircumcised. Their eyes will be wide with fear and their hearts trembling. Sweat will flow so much that it reaches some people’s ankles, others’ waists, and some will be covered in it completely.
But the believers will be in the shade of the Throne of the Most Merciful or the shade of their good deeds. On that Day, a person will run from his brother, mother, father, spouse, and children.
“Every person that Day will have enough to worry about.” [‘Abasa 80:37]
That Day will last 50,000 years, but for the believer, it will feel shorter than the time of an obligatory prayer.
On that Day, Allah will hold the earth in His Hand, and the heavens in His Right, and will say: “I am the King! Where are the tyrants? Where are the arrogant ones?”
It is a great Day, and we must prepare for it with righteous deeds.
The first thing a person will be judged on is prayer. If it is sound, the rest of their deeds will follow; if not, they will fail.
On that Day, people’s hands and feet will testify against them:
“Today, We will seal their mouths, and their hands will speak to Us, and their feet will testify about what they used to do.” [Ya-Sin 36:65]
Rights will be returned. If someone wronged another and has no good deeds left, the sins of the wronged person will be placed upon them and they will be thrown into Hell.
The scales will be set up:
“Whoever’s scales are heavy, they are the successful. Whoever’s scales are light, they are the losers, dwelling forever in Hell. Fire will burn their faces, and they will grimace in pain.” [Al-Mu’minun 23:102-104]
Books of deeds will be opened:
“They will say: Woe to us! What is this book that leaves nothing small or big without counting it?” [Al-Kahf 18:49]
Believers will take their books with their right hands, rejoicing, while disbelievers will take them with their left hands or from behind their backs, full of regret.
The bridge (Sirat) will be placed over Hell:
“There is none of you but will pass over it.” [Maryam 19:71]
People will cross it based on their deeds. Some will pass like lightning, others like wind, others like birds, and others like fast-running men. The Prophet ﷺ will stand at the bridge saying, “O Lord, keep them safe, keep them safe!”
Some people will only crawl, and there will be hooks on the sides that grab whom they are commanded to grab—some will be scratched and saved, others will fall into the Fire.
There will be the Prophet’s Basin (Al-Hawd). It will be as wide as a month’s journey. It has two fountains of gold and silver pouring water from Al-Kawthar, a river in Paradise. Its water is whiter than milk, sweeter than honey, more fragrant than musk, and colder than ice. Its cups are as many and as beautiful as the stars. Whoever drinks from it will never be thirsty again.
The believers from the Prophet’s ﷺ nation will come to it with shining faces, and the Prophet will recognize them by the traces of their ablution. But some people will be turned away, and he will say: “My nation!” and it will be said to him: “You don’t know what they did after you.”
On that Day, the great intercession (Al-Shafa’ah al-‘Uzma) will be for our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. All people will praise him for it.
As narrated in Bukhari and Muslim, the Prophet ﷺ said:
“On the Day of Judgment, all people will gather, and the sun will come close. The stress will be unbearable. They will go to Adam asking for intercession, but he will say, 'Myself, myself,' and send them to Noah. Noah will send them to Abraham, then to Moses, then to Jesus. Each will say, 'Myself, myself,' until they come to Muhammad ﷺ. He will say, 'I am for it.' Then he will go and fall in prostration before Allah. Allah will then permit him to intercede and say: 'Raise your head, ask and you will be given, intercede and it will be accepted.' Then the Prophet ﷺ will say: ‘My nation, my nation!’”
He will be told: “Enter from your nation those who will not be judged through the right gate of Paradise.” And he said: “By the One in whose Hand is my soul, the space between the two gates of Paradise is like the distance between Mecca and Yemen, or Mecca and Busra.”
